Environmental engineering is a term that is thrown around a lot these days but I would like to use it a little differently than it has currently been used in the news. I want to refer to the environment as my immediate surroundings and the engineering is what I do to my immediate surroundings to ensure that I achieve my goals.
This can be used in all aspects of life but I will only discuss how to use this in relation to fitness. If you are trying to achieve fast weight loss or any other fitness related goal for that matter your surrounding have a huge impact on your success or failure. Our surrounds, are nothing more than a reflection of who we are and what we do and our bodies are nothing more than a reflection of how we live our life. So that being said our surrounds have a huge impact on anything that we may be trying to accomplish.
A couple of examples of this strategy would be removing all of the junk food from your pantry and replacing it with healthy weigh loss oriented food, or taking it a step farther and preplanning all of your meals. Another strategy I like to use is to take temptation away by ruining that temptation. For example, if I go out to eat and they serve a basket of chips I will have a couple then when I am finished, douse the chips with my drink. Effectively ruining the chips and rendering them unconsumable. Sounds a little gross but it works and if I don’t do this I very well may polish off the basket.
This idea can take other forms such as putting your alarm clock across the room and placing your workout clothes where you will see them when you get up to turn off the clock. Setting the timer on the coffee pot so you will have a treat when you wake up. Placing written goals in highly visible areas or simply making setting goals can be a step for some people. Apply some competition to your life in the form of friendly bets with like minded people or enter a sporting event.
This principle can be applied in numerous creative ways and be highly effective for weigh loss, muscle building or success in any other pursuit. These built in controls become part of your life and the reflection of who you are, make them count and make them effective.
