Variation is the Name of the Weight Loss Game

If you like the majority of people trying to get in shape are more concerned with fast weight loss than with long term sustainable weight loss I have some good news. You can achieve both, with some simple planning and dedication. This article will assume that you have already taken steps to maximize your diet to reach your goals. Now I will discuss one of the easiest but most often overlooked strategies for weight loss as well as muscle and strength gain.

The idea is simple, vary your workouts. Exercise is simply challenging your body and allowing it to build back a little stronger. One fabulous thing about the human body is its ability to adapt to new situations. It does not take long for your body to adapt to a new workout and stop receiving the same level of benefit as it did in the past. This is why people initially make huge gains when starting an exercise program only to see these gains tapper off. It is also why people can train their bodies to run marathons or even ultra marathons. Bodies are adaptable, thus you must keep your body guessing.

This makes workouts harder because your body may not be trained in a certain movement pattern or type of exercise but it also allows you to continue making gains in weight loss or muscle building well past what could be a plateau.

It is amazing to see the vast majority of people gravitate towards one type of workout and do that workout for the next 20 years without much variation or improvement. It is disappointing to see that these same people eventually end up looking much like they did before they started that very workout program.

It is not difficult to vary workout programs. You don’t need highly specialized knowledge or a vast room full of sophisticated machines. It can be as simple as changing the number of reps from week to week or going from a full body workout to a split body part workout. With regard to cardiovascular fitness it can mean running hills, sprints, fartleks, and a steady pace. It can also mean varying the activity, running vs. biking. It can mean taking a week off to let your body really get a deep healing only a couch can provide. It can also mean varying your diet, try a vegetarian diet for a couple of weeks, or eliminate something negative like alcohol.  Try something fun like the Nintendo Wii, go ahead give it a shot buy wii fit, it might be just what you need and it doesn’t hurt to have a little fun while you are at it.

Switch it up, keep it different, keep it interesting and you will maximize your muscle gains and fast weight loss.
